Dasuquin Advanced (by Nutramax): Glucosamine and chondroitin products are not created equal.  In the nutraceutical world, products are in a free for all.  A nutraceutical is a term used for products that range from isolated nutrients, dietary supplements and herbal products, specific diets and processed foods.  There are no rules or regulation to their product labels.  The FDA does not regulate nutraceutical products, which means what is put into the products are not monitored.

Since there is this lack of regulation with these products, many companies that create these products (for human and pet) are not completely honest with consumers.  There have been recent studies done that up to 80% OF PRODUCTS DO NOT CONTAIN WHAT THE LABEL STATES!  I don’t know about you, but that is quite astonishing.  These glucosamine products only have trace amounts of glucosamine, chondroitin, or other labeled ingredients.  There have been a few exceptions when it comes to companies and labeling of products, these companies (although not required to) have tried to remain truthful and incorporate what is on the label to what is actually in the product.

The Village Veterinary Clinic of Hamburg tries to remain up to date on the current advancements and studies.  The products we supply are recommend because they are well researched (and trusted with the labels), we are familiar with them and we find that they work.  The product we recommend is called Dasaquin Advanced.

Glucosamine is a part of a glycosaminoglycan, one of the small molecules that makes up healthy cartilage. Adding glucosamine to your pet’s diet may help improve joint function by decreasing overall inflammation in the joint and increasing the health and longevity of the joint cartilage. The most effective form of glucosamine is glucosamine hydrochloride (glucosamine HCL), because it tends to be more concentrated than other formulations. Chondroitin is also found in healthy joints and supplementation with it also seems to help decrease joint inflammation and improve joint health. The most effective form is a low molecular weight chondroitin sulfate.

Dasaquin Advanced is a newer more technologically advanced product that we have begun to prescribed to pets.  What separates this product from the rest is what is put into the product.  Although not FDA regulated, Nutramax as a company tries to hold themselves to a higher standard by doing voluntary and independent testing to ensure what they put into their products is what is on the label.  It contains glucosamine and chondroitin which will help stimulate cartilage production and inhibit its breakdown.  They use a low molecular weight chondroitin which allows for the most effective and pure form of this substance, allowing the body to utilize it much more effectively than other products. Dasaquin Advanced also has ASU (which stands for avocado/soybean/unsaponifiables), which they have a patent for.  This protects cartilage and supports joint comfort.  It also allows the glucosamine/chondroitin to work better with  in its presence.  Allows for better uptake and utilization of the glucosamine/chondroitin by the body.  There is a green tea extract, ALA, curcumin for antioxidants; MSM for cartilage strengthening, and boswellia serrata to inhibit the inflammatory response.  These are just a few key ingredients that help create this product.

Pets can start glucosamine at any age.  It is recommended to be used on dogs and cats as a prophylactic measure or you can start to use it as they get older.  It is much easier on their bodies to help slow down the progression of cartilage before the process begins.  It is also important to note that many over the counter (not prescription) pet food companies have introduced foods for joint health. These foods typically will not contain a high enough glucosamine and chondroitin level necessary for your pet’s body weight, thus you would need to give additional supplements daily.

Omega 3, 6, 9 supplements (Vetri Science):  Omega 3, 6, 9’s can be beneficial to many body systems.  They play a role in joint health, immune system function, skin and eye health, cardiovascular and brain health.  There are 3 types of important essential fatty acids that your pet can benefit from: Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

EPA is key in pet’s with osteoarthritis.  It has been shown that EPA can reduce the amount of cartilage degradation.  EPA can also help reduce inflammation associated with osteoarthritis.

The product we recommend and have had success with is made by Vetri Science.  They have the correct formulations and ratios of the fish oils for dogs and cats.

Express Ease (Vetri Science):  This tasty treat can help those pets with anal gland issues.  The goal of the treat is to aid your pet in the ability to express their anal glands normally and on their own, decreasing the amount of times they need it done manually.  It supports fecal volume and healthy anal gland function.  Also provides immune, digestive and colonic support.

Vedalax hairball control (Vedco): A gentle preparation which can aid in the elimination and prevention of hairballs.  Hairballs accumulate in the digestive tract and can interfere with regular digestion and elimination. We offer the tuna flavor, cats really dig it!

Forbid: used to help stop your pet from stool eating. When ingested, For-Bid travels through the gastrointestinal tract and imparts an unappetizing taste to stool. Upon tasting the stool, they will notice the unpleasantness and should discard it. As this association is reinforced, the stool eating should cease.

Pill Pockets (for dogs and cats) (Greenies):  This is our best kept non-secrets to help give pets their medicine!  They have built in pouches to hide the pills.  They are tasty so they work well for training treats too!  These all-natural treats so they are much healthier than using human foods, because they have fewer calories and less fat and sodium.  You might also see us giving these out as treats quite often, they are that delicious!

Feliway:  Feliway is a synthetic copy of the feline facial pheromone, used by cats to mark their territoy as safe and secure.  By mimicking the cat’s natural facial pheromones, Feliway creates a state of familiarity and security in the cat’s local environment.  This allows cats to be comforted, feel content and reduce stress.  You can buy the diffuser and the recharge and then just buy the refill rechargers after.  They can be plugged in many areas of the house, wherever your cat likes to hang out most often.  You can have them in at all times or if you just want them in during more stressful times.  Refill vials typically last for 30 days and one diffuser covers an area up to 700 sq. feet.  If you have a multi-story home, you may need more than one diffuser.

Yesterday’s News litter (Purina):  Litter made from recycled paper.  They are in the shape of a logs instead of pebbles.  Recommended for post surgical patients (especially those with open wounds or foot wounds).

Knockout Spray (Virbac):  House spray containing pyrethrins and permethrin to kill active flea and tick infestations.  Able to kill the adults.  Also, contains pyriproxyfen (NYLAR® Insect Growth Regulator) to prevent flea infestations from developing for up to 4 months. One 16 oz can covers 2,100 square feet.  Leaves no unpleasant odor or sticky mess and, when used as directed, does not stain furnishings.

  • Please follow exact directions on the bottle when using, cannot be in direct contact of pets!
  • Don’t forget to treat your pets with the proper flea and tick medications as well.

Pill Gun (Dr. Hansen’s): Used to help aid in administering your pets medications.  You can place a capsule or pill in the pill gun and give to those who are not as cooperative as others.

Nail Trimmers (Large Dog Clip, Miller’s Forge… Small Dog/Cat Clippers, JorVet):  We prefer to use these type of trimmers.  You have better visualization and control when trimming nails.  Get your dogs learning early… Start playing with puppies and kittens paws when they are young so nail trims are a breeze as they get older.
